How to read the atlas

π = 3,1415926535… Le 3 initial occupe la position 0 ; la première décimale est à la position 1.

Positional mapping

The sphere is an icosahedron: 20 triangles, each recursively split into four by normalised edge midpoints. Level L has 20·4L cells (20, 80, 320, 1,280, 5,120 …).

Cell id at level L owns digits ⌊id·N / (20·4L)⌋ up to, not including, ⌊(id+1)·N / (20·4L)⌋. A child's id is parent·4 + 0…3, so every region holds a contiguous run of digits.

Colour modes

Digits tints a cell by its most frequent digit; brightness grows with how far that share exceeds the expected 10%.

Entropy is Shannon entropy H = −Σ pᵢ log₂ pᵢ of a cell's digit frequencies (maximum log₂10 ≈ 3.32 bits). Colour is scaled against the entropy expected of a random sequence of the same length: indigo is unusually ordered, gold unusually even.

Controls

Drag to rotate, scroll or pinch to zoom, click a cell for its statistics. Keys: arrows rotate, + / − zoom, H home, M mode, / search.

Digits stream in as 10,000-digit chunks only where you look. Statistics above level 4 are computed from the chunks currently loaded.
